A Cure For Wellness is an intricately written mystery blending genres so well it will keep you second guessing constantly as to where this story is going. From Gore Verbinski, the director of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and The Ring is an intense psychological, gothic horror, sci-fi, mystery thriller that switches between the genres in such an organic sense you don't realise it's doing it until it is done. A Cure For Wellness is a refreshing addition to modern horror films as it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares but uses its narrative to show the horror in modern civilisation.
The movies plot is Lockhart (Dane Dehaan), a young Wall Street executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from a health spa in the Swiss Alps and soon suspects that the spa may have a sinister side. The story was comprised by Verbinski and script writer Justin Haythe and it's a phenomenal outcome on screen. Verbinski must have had a vision of how this was going to be aesthetically when drafting up this story as the scenes are so well executed with subtle changes in the lighting as the film rotates through its genres. Dehaan gives it his all in this movie, showing a spectrum of emotion as his character delves deeper down the metaphoric rabbit hole. We first encounter him cocky and smug but as the events unfold, we see he contains more layers. Jason Isaacs plays Volder, the spa's top doctor who obviously has a dark side as menace glistens through his smiles. A Cure For Wellness may not contain anything new, it does however bring forth aspects of many genres into one refreshing story with a captivating mystery full of atmosphere and gripping performances. This film is definitely worth a watch. Mr. Cynic Rates this 8.5/10 If you like Shutter Island, you will most likely enjoy this.
