American Assassin blends spy espionage with brutal action and then entwined around a personal revenge story. The film follows Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien - Maze Runner) a young man who's lost a lot in his life and when terrorists kill his fiance and leave him for dead, he makes it his personal mission to get revenge. It's not long and Mitch is recruited by the American government and working along side ex-Navy Seal Stan Hurley (Micheal Keaton - Birdman).
The story does have a rather fast pace as threats progress and the characters take new direction, it remains enjoyable and sits fairly well in the fantasy of this could be real. Although things seem to have escalated too far for the finale as it rushes into something that is too outlandish for what the tone has been previously. The ending loses the level of threat despite characters feeling to be in jeopardy previous to this moment. The characters are nothing particularly new to the genre but the dynamic between them on screen feels fresh especially for anyone who interacts with Mitch. The cast does well but Keaton steals every scene he's in with his very dry serious tone which compliments O'Brien's tense, energetic anger very well. The direction had a dancers flow in how it was quick and followed every move through the action scenes yet remained graceful in the cameras motion. American Assassin is vibrant brutal action thrown into a personal vendetta against terrorism. It has a balance of enthusiasm and edgeyness. Unfortunately it loses itself in the end. Mr. Cynic rates this a 7/10 I feel American Assassin could have been 8.5 or a 9 out of 10 if they'd have worked on that ending a little more and have added some more depth to the antagonist. For those reasons, I'd like to see this film be a start of a franchise to follow the book series of which it's an adaptation of as I think with a sequel, they could fix what problems this film has.
