From Director of The Bourne Identity (Doug Liman) comes American made, based on a true story and adding a dose of humour to the tale of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise); a pilot who became a drug runner in the 1980's. This is an entertaining take on a true story. Using humour to play on how unbelievable the story is interesting and allows the events to be more memorable. The comedy doesn't distract from any seriousness or tension when the scenes require it, the film holds a well balanced tone.
Liman chooses an almost documentary style approach by using handheld cameras as a constant reminder that this happened despite how exaggerated some scenarios may seem. Although this is Hollywood and it's advertised as "based on" and so we know they're going to take some liberties. Cruise plays Seal with so much energy and his famous charisma from some of his iconic movies such as Top Gun and Cocktail. The supporting cast are all very talented but are out performed by Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) who plays Seal's CIA handler. The Score by Christophe Beck (Ant-Man) captures the sound of the 80's very well by simulating the sounds of popular rock music of the time. He manages to capture the sense of fun the film holds and merge it with action or tension so it connects with the scenes. This is a film that is definitely re-watchable and is more entertaining on a fun level than most true story films. For that reason alone it leaves you wondering just how much is true and yet Tom Cruise charms his way through this film so well that you don't care. Mr. Cynic rates this 7.5/10
