10 years in the making and 18 films previous, Avengers: Infinity War is Marvel's latest attempt to rule the box office. This time bringing nearly every previous character seen to take on the threat they teased 6 years ago in their first team-up movie Avengers. The plot is fairly straight forward. Except with Infinity War it is not just about this saving the world, this time it is the entire universe at stake from the threat of Thanos (Josh Brolin - No Country for Old Men) who wishes to wipe-out half the universe. Our beloved heroes must join forces and this time it's all of them (but a few that I won't mention).
The pacing of the story is done rather steady and picks up momentum at the halfway point. It doesn't ever feel slow or overdrawn. The humour as with most Marvel films feels a little forced to prevent it getting too serious but it doesn't take any drama away like in Thor: Ragnorok. The Character's are as great as they've been before by all the cast returning to reprise. But this time we see new character interactions as our heroes get tangled into others lives. Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch - TV's Sherlock) and Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr. - Sherlock Holmes) have some great back and forth of dialogue as their ego's meet. Yet it's Brolin's Thanos that steals the show as this is the first time his character has had anything more of a little cameo. Thanos is one of the greatest villains Marvel has brought to screen. The Threat Thanos brings is far more serious than previous Marvel films as the film creates an intensity around him and we feel that our heroes' lives are in peril. That's an achievement as it's the villains that normally flaw the films from being a little two dimensional. Brolin brings some real emotion to this role which made a nice surprise to see such a powerful villain appear vulnerable. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have proven their talents before with the Captain America trilogy but they've practically broken cinema history this time. They've kept all characters in tone of previous films sustained pacing on a natural level for the plot to progress and even got the villain to have depth. The Russo Brothers returned to direct after their previous two Marvel films (Winter Soldier and Civil War) have been successes. They understand the visuals required for a big budget superhero film. Not just that but they shoot action scenes very well and they have proven themselves worthy to direct the fourth Avengers film which is scheduled for May next year. Mr. Cynic rates this 8.5/10
