Baby Driver is the latest and most different film from Director Edgar Wright. It is stylish, fresh and thrilling. It's a crime film with enjoyment and full of heart and most certainly one of the best films of the year. Wright has said on Twitter that Baby Driver is the movie he's been wanting to make for over twenty years and it shows. He's directed this to the letter, every character movement is staged to fit with the tracks of the music as if Wright has transformed regular motion into dance. Even the cuts are to the rhythm. The music is a large aspect of Baby Driver as it's a large trait to the lead character Baby (Ansel Elgort) and help tell the narrative of the film.
The cast really surge on screen with a lively presence and yet hit you heavy with drama just as easily. The characters are all something we've seen before in other crime films from over the years but Wright's screenplay has given them an energy, a quirky vibe (somehow) making them feel original and entertaining with a good hint of humour. The car chases in this have a very old fashioned feel to them despite the high quality shots and the fast cuts we're used to in more recent films. The action in this is well thought through and is timed superbly to the beats and/or words of the music, I can only imagine the editing nightmare. Baby Driver is a must watch, it's not just going to be one of the greatest movies to watch this year but I believe it to be Edgar Wright's best work and possibly some of the greatest chase scenes we're going to see for a while. It's vibrant for the eyes, rhythmic for the ears and simply just pure entertainment for the soul. Mr. Cynic rates this film 9/10
