Dunkirk may not be Nolan's first period piece but it is his first war film. The film has a bleak tone and some solid performances from new actors to the experienced. Although depicting the history of the Dunkirk evacuation rather accurately it fails to entertain. Nolan's direction lacks vision to create any impacting scenes despite how well they are shot by the talented cinematography of Hoyte van Hoytema (Her, Interstellar). The opening scene and the very last shot of Tom Hardy are the only scenes that stand out as they sandwich a series of rather dull shots between them. The bleak tones of colours are a great look for the film yet the film lacks any true atmosphere of the setting as most the props and costumes appear too crisp.
The story is told from three interlocking perspectives of land, sea and air each covering a different frame of time: land - one week, sea - one day, and air - one hour. This unique story telling is one of few things to enjoy in this film as it's not a common thing to see. Overall, the film has very little dialogue for a two hour feature but it has enough to pull it through and isn't a problem in telling the necessary story, there's even an adequate amount to give depth to characters and understand them. The performance of the talented ensemble cast really shows in this film as it is up to them to pull the movie along when there is nothing to be said. I even look forward to seeing future films starring newcomers Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney and Harry Styles as they steal the thunder from such as Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. Hans Zimmer scores the movie and delivers one of his best sounds yet as he captures the scenes beautifully with very intricate sounds. If it wasn't for his score in this film there would be next to nothing of atmosphere in the film. It's obvious that much effort and passion has been spilled into Dunkirk and sadly it's almost unwatchable. There isn't really anything we haven't seen before in other war films that have more impact and gripping stories to be told. Mr. Cynic Rates this a 5/10 I'm disappointed with this film as it's rather experimental from a wonderfully talented team. However I believe if Nolan tries something like this again, it will be an improvement.
