Scrubs star Zach Braff's third directorial feature film, Going In Style is a Comedy Crime Caper (and a remake of the 1979 film of the same name) and it is more than just a comedy but a heart warming drama as well. The first thing I noticed was the films score by Rob Simonsen. It's a sound unfamiliar in current films and more reminiscent to a sound before the millennium. The sound is orchestraic and has a sense of adventure. As the film progresses through, the score does too. It captures the scenes with ease and draws you into the emotions of the characters.
The characters of this caper is what gives Going In Style a charm and warmth most comedies don't contain. With its cast of Micheal Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin, the humour comes from more than just gags about their age but their experience. These are some of Hollywood's finest and proving so with their comedy timing. For comedy timing, Christopher Lloyd has the most punctual with his supporting role bringing a laugh with him every time he's on screen. The story isn't anything original but does it keep you on your toes and entertained? Most certainly. It may be targeted to a smaller audience than most films as to many it will probably look vanilla and appear to be playing it safe. I say "so what?" If you like the actors, you'll enjoy this. If you like your old school comedies such as See No Evil, Hear No Evil then chances are, you'll get a kick out of this. Zach Braff has put together something unique for a modern film. He's created a film that feels old yet new to watch. It's a film with laughs and has a heart. With easy laughs and some moving performances, Going In Style isn't just the title of the film but what the film manages to do also. Mr. Cynic rates this a 7/10
