It Comes at Night is a well crafted character-driven, on the edge of your seat suspense horror. This is a film that plays greatly on human nature and our fears of other people. It doesn't rely on characters to make illogical decisions to pull the story along like most, instead it draws focus on the behaviour of them in a more realistic manner causing the story to be engrossing as the characters have more depth.
The pacing of this movie escalates with optimum timing for building up the suspense and delivering fear. The dialogue is grounded and not over complicated as it turns these characters into 'everyday people'. It's written so well that the post apocalyptic world is accepted and what we need to know about it, is what the characters know. The characters are the essential key to the film as it is about their survival in a post apocalyptic world and not about the post apocalyptic world (which is what a Hollywood movie would be). These soon become characters we invest in and feel for, it doesn't take long after been introduced to a character that they have our attention and we're on their side in their survival. The acting is the 'deal maker' with this film, Joel Edgerton (Warrior) as the lead really shines as he plays Paul, a father who's doing the best he can to protect his family. Carmen Ejogo (Alien: Covenant) plays Paul's wife with such normality in the role (along with the other cast members) it almost feels like a fly on the wall reality show. The other cast members are mostly rising stars and I would say look out for Riley Keough who stars in Logan Lucky (Review coming soon) as I think she's going to break into more major films in the upcoming years. This is Writer/Director Trey Edward Shults' second feature film and he has made what will become a cult classic. His directing is just as suspenseful as his story telling capabilities and it's that marriage of skills which really helps bring in the horror. He makes great use of wide shots and cutting to close-up and has some of the best effects created from pulling-in shots to elevate suspense and horror that I've seen. It Comes At Night isn't just a great suspense horror, it's wonderful character piece. It's horror film that isn't just going to scare but stay with you for a while because although it's only 90 minutes long, those characters are going to stay with you for a while longer.
