It is a dark drama, horror which focus' on a group of children facing their fears while trying to save their town from an evil force in the shape of an evil clown. This is the second time Stephen King's novel It has been adapted, the first time was a TV mini-series in 1990 starring Tim Curry as the demon Pennywise. This time, Bill Skarsgård plays Pennywise amongst an ensemble cast of highly-talented young actors.
The cast are definitely the strongest piece to this movie, they may be young but they certainly are skillful. Each one of the "Losers Club" have a rather fleshed out character and have brilliant chemistry between themselves. Although the film fails to scare, it does not prevent the entertainment of being on edge from the tension created from the score by Benjamin Wallfisch (Lights Out - a must watch for horror fans). The score is dramatic, atmospheric and captivating; making it one of the best horror film scores in a long time. The direction is on point as the framing draws the eye in the right direction just at the right moment for all the eerie details. The contrast of the brighter scenes in comparison to the edgier scenes compliment each other so well, stopping the film getting bogged down in many modern horror film cliche's. For a horror film that fails to scare is no reason to dislike this as it is superb story telling which has a subtle amount of intensity flowing through. Anybody familiar with the book and/or previous adaptation are not going to be disappointed and will feeling as if they're witnessing something fresh despite the familiarity. Mr. Cynic rates this 7/10
