La La Land is a wondrous blend of golden age Hollywood and modern cinematography, it's present days Singin' in the Rain. The film opens with a very colourful song and dance sequence that screams classical musical but we can see modern Los Angeles, instantly setting up this movies tone. Soon after, we're quickly introduced to Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a faithful Jazz musician as they chase their dreams. This is Gosling and Stone's third time starring opposite each other and their onscreen chemistry hasn't fizzled. They react off one another so well, it is hard to believe they're not a couple off screen. The characters become compelling to watch through their struggling ambition due to the raw emotion given from the actors. Although Stone delivers in this movie, I feel it is Gosling who holds the lime light as he seeps a classic Hollywood charm throughout.
La La Land has a compelling story with believable characters and a beautiful jazz themed score helping the movie's fast pace seem a little edgy and joyful simultaneously. As for the songs in this film, they're nothing truly new to the genre of musical if you're familiar with the classics such as; Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story and My Fair Lady. yet they're well structured and are never really forced as they also enhance the emotion and atmosphere of the scene. The fashion even blends the tones of today with the style of classic Hollywood as the characters are mostly dressed in a sleek dress and a sharp suit. It just helps the musical numbers feel more in place as the songs don't have a particularly modern sound. It was certainly refreshing to have this classic tale of chasing dreams return to cinema and it be completely original. Writer and director, Damien Chazelle has hopefully starting a new wave to hit Hollywood but time will tell. Mr. Cynic rates this a 7/10
