Logan doesn't insist on being a superhero movie, instead it's a dystopian road movie that features a superhero and that is why this is great viewing material. Set in a not too distant future, Logan (Hugh Jackman) is more weathered and broken while playing carer to frail a Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) when they encounter a young girl, Laura (Dafne Keen) who becomes their mission to keep safe.
Placing its characters first is definitely what elevates this film and sets it aside from the rest of the X-Men franchise and dare I say other superhero movies? I do. The story is emotional, violent and captivating which is just something unique. It's rare to find this level of violence found with such heart heavy drama, this fusion of opposites is deep in the roots to Logan's character and it's this element which is captivating. The performances are solid, Jackman has not just gave his last time playing Logan but his best version of the character as he embodies the famous rage of Wolverine and the hidden heart he carries also. Stewart was all in on the powerful display of emotion this time around as he hits home on those heart strings as he plays a conscience to stoic hero. Keen does a superb job in her first feature length movie as she plays a strong and very silent girl who burdens rage. Keen shows a lot of her characters thoughts and feelings through facial expression alone, I believe she'll become a rising star from this strong performance. Mangold tackles this with hints of a western like his 3:10 to Yuma than he did with his previous film and predecessor to Logan, The Wolverine. The Wolverine was confined to tropes of superhero films with its flashy fight scenes full of special effects. With Logan we are gifted with gritty and almost real violence in the fight scenes. This captures the character from the source material far greater than before from the franchise over the past 17 years. If this is the last time Jackman portrays Wolverine then both he and Mangold have given the fans something worth their time. Logan is full of anticipation and raw emotion and not being a generic superhero film is a string to its bow. Mr. Cynic rates this a 9/10
