This new take on Power Rangers is more similar to Chronicle. It's a creative, fun and a more modern take of Power Rangers. They have definitely Mighty Morphed this time and for the better. From it's very opening sequence it was obvious that Power Rangers is taking itself more serious this time around despite displaying good humour. Project Almanac director Dean Israelite has done a superb job at capturing a grittier take on what is known for been cheesy.
Unlike the show of the 90's and even the original movie, we are given more time with the characters and get an understanding of who they are. The characters this time are the story, they pull it along with their journey. We experience their origin as they do and we feel the excitement when they do from discovering their powers. Yes, this movie is an origin story. It is a reboot after all. But the writers of this and Israelite have crafted a wondrous sense of enjoyment from this origin. The first half is all a tease to the Power Rangers we know. The first half is also more of a sci-fi mystery adventure. Watching the team come together and discover what is going on is more entertaining than when they are actually the Power Rangers. When we get them as Rangers, that is when it becomes more familiar of the 90's incarnation. It becomes loud, colourful and full of cuts between the characters in the action of it. The acting isn't award worthy but the five young up and coming stars playing the Rangers do more than what is required of them for this movie. They keep their characters grounded no matter what is happening in the scenes. I expect to see them more frequently over the next few years as they grow into more serious talent. Let's not forget Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad is a supporting character and regrettably is not the best thing this movie can offer. The villain Rita Repulsa is portrayed by Elizabeth Banks of The Hunger Games franchise and is a surprising performance to see if you're familiar with her other roles. This time around Banks is a rather powerful and intimidating character that is just entertaining to watch. This incarnation makes some bold moves and has a darker tone hovering over a very familiar superhero team movie plot. Trying a horror take with Rita and a fair chunk of teen drama mixed into the mystery adventure of the teams origin is a refreshing touch to the child friendly superhero movie. This movies interpretation is a certain hit for the fans of Mighty Morphin Power Ranger and should be a lasting impression for a new generation getting acquainted to Power Rangers.
