The Ghoul is not a horror as the title exists but a fantastic example of British Independent Cinema. It's dark and superbly acted. With a David Lynch (Mulhalland Drive) edge to it's Police crime drama turn psychological thriller, The Ghoul tells the story of a homicide detective (Tom Meeten - Prevenge) who goes undercover as a patient to a psychiatrist he believes is linked to a double murder. Only to find he starts to lose track of reality. Meeten manages to bring gravitas to the role and proves to be a strong lead. The entire cast all show their talent with their display of characters, it's incredible when most of the cast are mostly known for their comedy background. The performances are heightened by the claustrophobic style of directing. This is Gareth Tunley's first feature length film as both writer and director. His past credits for both writer and director previously are to comedy series so this was a surprise. It's a brilliantly original story that can be easily enjoyed for multiple viewings. The Score by Waen Shepherd (Murder in Successville) expresses the themes of the film and develops the atmosphere further. It fits the scenes and builds suspense intrigue throughout the course of the films mystery. As Tunley's first feature film, he's created something he may have trouble besting. The Ghoul is definitely a thought provoking and close attention should be payed for maximum experience of the plot. It's a mind bending story and a great psychological detective drama brought to life by a cast of highly talented actors. Mr. Cynic rates this a 9.5/10 For those interested, the trailer is linked below as I know most people will not have seen it. The Ghoul Trailer
