The Hunter is an Australian film from 2011 that I feel slipped through the cracks and so I'd like to place a spotlight on it for a while. Starring Willem Dafoe as lead character Martin David, a hunter (possibly an assassin) hired by an organisation to seek out a Tasmanian Tiger. The Tasmanian Tiger has been extinct since the 1930's, why would this organisation send him for such a creature with only a few possible sightings? To quickly summarise the plot without spoilers, Martin must track the apparent Tasmanian Tiger for an organisation but he soon finds himself hunted as he draws nearer to the truth.
The Hunter is a simple film with a lot too offer, focusing on the characters more than the plot which drives the story forward through the emotional changers in the character instead of the more familiar plot device. The acting is phenomenal as we see the characters progress with a natural flow and a great sense of realism to the characters. Mostly recognised with Martin (Dafoe) as he warms up to the children through out the film as it becomes obvious he is starting to care for them which is surprising as he seem to be a solitary person. Dafoe brings a charm to his character while also maintaining to feel cold which is an incredible feat as without this enigmatic charm, the film wouldn't be half as enjoyable. Sam Neill may be in this film but he just can't get the spot lamp shining like Dafoe. Neill may give a solid performance although it is nothing we haven't seen from him before. Daniel Nettheim, the director does a superb job on his second feature length by capturing the countryside in beautiful wide shot and angles more common in wildlife documentaries. Now if his name is familiar to you, that's because he's done directing for a few big shows; Whitechapel (2013), Humans (2015) and Doctor Who (2015) as well as credited to return for two more episodes this year. This film is a must watch for anyone who enjoys a strong performance and a simple yet compelling plot. Mr. Cynic is rating this a 9/10
