The Villainess is a South Korean action film that is just as heavy hitting in the drama. This is the writer and director Byung-gil Jung's second feature length since 2012's Confession of Murder. With an instantly engaging first person opening action scene, the film proves worthy of your attention. Byung-gil's directing doesn't lose focus on any action sequence, every cut and angle change allows for nothing more than better views and increasing of visuals to the spectacular choreography. Use of close-ups aid in humanising these characters as we see them react to drama and consequences going on around them. Sadly the film suffers in change of tone as it cuts between action and spy drama. This gives some breaks in pacing also yet the balance of each holds pretty well. Fortunately the films drama is just as interesting as the action as the plot takes many twists making outcomes unpredictable. The choreography in this film is fluid and flawless. It looks great and feels practical, nothing too flashy yet not mundane. The acting is fantastic but everyone gets out-shined by Ok-bin Kim who plays the films lead protagonist Sook-hee. Ok-bin manages to balance her ferocity and feminism incredibly making her one of modern cinema's greatest femme fatales. Ja Wan Koo's score brings an intensity to every scene with it's fast beats and it's suspenseful pace and some violent sound violins. The score is written for the scenes and not for the characters creating a very atmospheric sound. The Villainess may have a pacing issue but it's easily forgiven due to it's stylistic action and it's brilliantly crafted story of revenge. It's violent and enigmatic leaving you thinking about those fight sequences and pondering harder over the story. A trailer for the film can be found at the bottom of the page as I know not many will have much knowledge of this film. Mr. Cynic rates this a 7.5/10 The Villainess Trailer #2
