Turbo Kid is Mad Max meets Kick-Ass. It is a charming comedy that plays on tropes to most action films and children's films of the '80s and '90s. Based on the short film T is for Turbo by the same creative team (Video at the end of Review for those interested) and set in an alternate 1997 where the world is a desolate wasteland ruled by a tyrant with a reluctant teenager become hero to stop him. The creators don't take this films story serious which shows through there use of gags submerged into the cliche genre scenes spread through out keeping the violence and over the top gore light-hearted. The film may be created with a low budget but it does not hold back anything. The FX team may have been pushed to get the over the top gore requirements and they succeeded as the gore is the right level to make the action into an almost slapstick style of humour. Although the gore is over the top, the acting is not. The actors in this are all pretty fresh in this film with the exception of Michael Ironside who was surprisingly not the strongest performance. Everyone delivered great performances, keeping a grounded tone where required and switching to corny style to deliver the character trope dialogue that adds a wonderful sense of humour to the scenes we've seen numerous times. The '80s synth style score through out is very fitting, enhancing the scenes and capturing the many elements of the characters' emotions. Turbo Kid uses the nostalgia of many things we've seen before and spins it into playful dialogue and rather comical gore, producing a film for grownups that the child inside can enjoy. Mr. Cynic is rating this a 8/10 For those interested, check out the videos below. The original short on which the film is based; T is for Turbo Turbo Kid Trailer
